📚 How to Create a Dropdown Menu for Your Books in WordPress
Organising your author website makes it easy for readers to explore your catalogue. A dropdown menu dedicated to your books keeps your navigation clean while highlighting your work. You can set this up quickly right from your dashboard.
🛠️ Step 1: Creating the Menu
First, you need to access the menu manager within your site’s backend.
- Navigate to your dashboard: Log in to WordPress and go to Appearance > Menus.
- Start a new menu: Click the “create a new menu” link, name it something clear like “Main Menu”, and click Create Menu.
📄 Step 2: Adding Book Pages
Next, pull your individual book items into the active menu space.
- Select your pages: Look at the left-hand column and check the boxes for each book page.
- Add and link: Click Add to Menu. Ensure each page includes clear links that direct readers straight to their respective purchase locations (such as Amazon, Smashwords, or your direct shop).
🗂️ Step 3: Organising the Menu
This is where you turn a flat list into a clean, professional dropdown format.
- Create the parent item: Add a main page or a custom link named ‘Books’ to act as the top-level anchor.
- Drag and drop: Drag your individual book pages directly underneath the ‘Books’ item.
- Indent to nest: Slide each book slightly to the right. This indents them, turning them into sub-items that pop up as a dropdown menu when a reader hovers over ‘Books’.
💾 Step 4: Saving Changes
Your menu will not appear live on your site until you publish it to a theme slot.
- Assign a location: Scroll down to the Menu Settings and check the box for your desired theme location (usually labelled Primary, Header, or Main Navigation).
- Commit the build: Click the blue Save Menu button on the right to push the changes live to your site.
